Spain Park Athletics

Coach Thompson begins his 14th year at Spain Park and will be coaching the wide receivers. He was DC from 2016-2021 and served as the OC in 2013-15 helping Spain Park to a 2014 7A State Runner-Up finish. In 2009-10 he served as OC at Oxford HS and Special Teams/Passing Coordinator from 2005-08 and Head Wrestling Coach from 2005-11. In 2004, Coach Thompson was OC at Robert E. Lee High School. In 2003, he coached WRs and was Head Wrestling Coach at Saint James School. Coach Thompson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Robert E. Lee High School. He was there from 1998-02 and was also Head Wrestling Coach. He served as Special Teams Coordinator in 2001-02 and OC in 2000. In 1999, he coached RBs and helped lead them to a 1999 6A State Runner-Up finish. From 1992-98, he coached at Capitol Heights Jr High School where he coached football, wrestling, and track.  

Coach Thompson is from Montgomery, AL and is a 1991 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and earned his B.S. in Physical Education from Auburn University at Montgomery and his Master’s in Educational Leadership from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Coach Thompson and his wife Betsy have three children - Mary Grace (23), John Robert (20), and James David (14).
